About Me

Name:   Mark Summers

Background:   I am a part-time research student and hourly paid lecturer in music at Coventry University. As a performer I am interested in improvisation, reed instruments and electronics. My PhD research subject is free improvisation, particularly communication and processes used by improvising musicians; my superviser is ex-AMM member Christopher Hobbs as my superviser. I perform with Transgression which combines acoustic instruments with delays/loops, electronic sounds and live sampling. A member of the Birmingham Improvisers Orchestra, I particularly value collaborating with artists from other disciplines such as film/video and dance. My other interests/specialisms in music are: contemporary jazz, with a focus on the free/avant-garde of the 1950s onwards; composing for improvisers; contemporary art music; performance analysis. For more information, visit my website at: www.marksummers.co.uk.

I teach on the undergraduate music programme at Coventry University focussing on jazz, improvisation and ensemble studies.
